Defending champions Calabar turned the tables on Jamaica College with a 1-0 victory to waltz into the Walker Cup competition in their ISSA/Pepsi/ JN Manning Cup match at the National Stadium yesterday.
Shane Bygrave scored the decisive goal for Calabar in the
43rd minute.
Excelsior also inched closer to a place in the Walker Cup with a 4-0 thrashing of Dunoon Technical.
Striker Jermaine Parris scored a hat-trick, netting in the 13th, 22nd and 59th minutes for the Mountain View-based team for whom Dasean Meek also scored in minute number 16.
In a Group A game which Excelsior dominated, Parris opened his account when he converted a left-side cross from Meek which the Dunoon defence failed to clear.
A beaten bunch
Meek then got his name on the scoreboard with a rasping 25-yard drive past goalkeeper Damion Brown. By the time Parris passed Brown for Excelsior's third, Dunoon were a beaten bunch.
Excelsior's coach, Leebert Halliman, whose team has already qualified for the second round, said his side was merely going through the paces.
"We just needed a victory. We didn't think we should have exerted all our energy today because we will need it in the second round," Halliman said.
The win pushes Excelsior to 23 points from 11 games, one behind fellow second-round qualifiers Waterford, who completed their first-round fixtures with an 8-0 drubbing of Tarrant. Mark Watson, with a whopping five goals, and Anthony Stichell, Conrod White and Andre Darby were the goals scorers.
With a game in hand
against Tarrant on Wednesday, Excelsior need only a win to make the Walker Cup as Group A winners.
