Laptops in Parliament
published: Friday | June 22, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Unless there is a system for blocking electronic communication, Members of Parliament can receive email through cellphones quietly and unobtrusively. So, having a policy of not allowing email on computers would be ineffective.

In any case, it does not seem logical to prevent an MP from receiving information which could enhance his presentation and improve the efficiency of the nation's business.

Information is at the heart of what drives the new economy. Fortunately for Jamaica, the devices and technologies which drive this"information economy" are open and rapidly changing, thus allowing small states such as ours to participate in this very lucrative and global business as many young Jamaicans have done.

Let's embrace the information age, participate and excel so that we can transform the country at a much faster rate for the benefit of all Jamaicans and our friends who visit.

I am, etc.,
